It’s Halloween next week. The neighborhoods are decorated with black cats, ghosts, and after dark everything is slightly more sinister. That spooky effect doesn’t end at suburban yards or city stoops, but it’s found its way inside and is terrorizing bookshelves, too. As proof, we’re sharing some of the spookiest parts from our first Young Adult novel, The Wild Book by Juan Villoro!
And to share our Halloween spirit, we’re offering readers a special chance to win an advance copy of The Wild Book! All you have to do is spookify a book title by giving it a Halloween twist and include the hashtag #HauntABook on Facebook or Twitter. Here are some #HauntABook examples from our staff: Don Quixoterror, The Three Muskefears, and ZomBeloved. We’ll pick a winner on Halloween.
Have you ever been the last one to leave a library and the lights start turning off while you’re deep in the shelves? Or have you ever felt that a book was watching you? Maybe a book wasn’t where you left it, or maybe you’ve caught them moving on their own as if you’re haunted by book-loving poltergeist? It is these types of book related eeriness that The Wild Book invokes with its fantastical elements and Juan’s quest to find the elusive Wild Book.
“I’m going to describe what happened when I was thirteen. It’s something I haven’t been able to forget, as if the story had me by the throat. It might sound strange, but I can feel the hands of this story upon me, a sensation that’s so specific I even know the hands are wearing gloves.” (7)
“My favorite color at that time was scarlet. How I like the sound of the word ‘scarlet’! In the dream, I didn’t see the crying woman, but I knew that she was there. Before speaking to her, I approached one of the walls, hypnotized by its scarlet color. Only then did I realize that its surface was liquid. No one had painted those walls. I placed my hands on the surface and the blood ran between my fingers”. (8)
“Sitting at one sofa was my father, reading the newspaper. Suddenly, the newspaper began to burn, but he didn’t do anything. He looked at the fire as if it were a news article. I woke up before the flames reached his hands”. (20)
“It smelled of old books that didn’t seem to be preserved there, but instead seemed to be the room’s prisoners. I picked up the book closest to me and a cloud of dust powdered my face. It was thick dust, like breadcrumbs. I took a few more steps and the sensation of being enclosed became stronger. I didn’t dare keep breathing that dense, dead air”. (82-83)
“Suddenly, I felt something at the nape of my neck. A page from a book. Worse yet, it wasn’t a still page! It was a page that had moved. I could feel its caress”. (89)
Hopefully those spooky quotes will hold you over until tomorrow’s festivities. Have a safe Halloween from your friends at Restless BOO!—ahem—Restless Books.
